McCain's World

What does a week in McCain's World look like? Check out this members-only site for the inside scoop.

In McCain's World, judges, not women,
have control over our reproductive freedom.

        Here's what McCain says:

"I'm proud that we have Justice Alito and Roberts on the United States Supreme Court. I'm very proud to have played a very small role in making that happen." McCain explained further that he "will try to find clones of Alito and Roberts" to fill future court vacancies.

McCain's voting record proves that he is determined to take away our rights through judicial appointments:

  • He voted to confirm Samuel Alito, who then cast the deciding vote upholding the Federal Abortion Ban.
  • He voted for John Roberts, who also voted to uphold the Federal Abortion Ban.
  • He voted to confirm Clarence Thomas, who then joined opinions calling for the overturn of Roe v. Wade.
  • He voted for Robert Bork's failed nomination too. Years later, Bork said that, had his nomination been confirmed, Roe v. Wade would have been overturned.

And if that's not enough, McCain voted for anti-choice nominees to lower courts too:

  • He supported William Pryor, nominated to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, who called Roe v. Wade "the worst abomination of constitutional law in our history."
  • He voted for Janice Rogers Brown, nominated to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, who said about one ruling that a corporation's female employees were free to find "more congenial employment" if they did not like being discriminated against.
  • He voted to confirm Priscilla Owen, nominated to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, who issued a dissent in a parental-notification case that even her colleague Alberto Gonzales called "an unconscionable act of judicial activism."
  • He voted for J. Leon Holmes, nominated to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas, who criticized Roe v. Wade and said legal abortion "is the simplest issue this country has faced since slavery was made unconstitutional. And it deserves the same response."
  • He supported Carolyn Kuhl, nominated to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, who co-authored a Supreme Court brief arguing that Roe v. Wade "is so far flawed that this court should overrule it."
  • He voted for Charles Pickering, nominated to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, who supported a resolution urging Congress to pass a constitutional amendment to ban abortion under most circumstances while serving in the Mississippi State Senate.
