HALL OF FAME AND HALL OF SHAME

FAME: Rep. José Serrano of New York
For 15 years, an arcane anti-choice law blocked the locally elected leaders of our nation's capital from deciding whether to use local funds to pay for abortion services for low-income women. But, under the leadership of Rep. José Serrano (NY-16) and other pro-choice allies in Congress, the House of Representatives voted to lift this ban—while rejecting anti-choice efforts to reinsert it.

The Senate will take up this issue in the fall, and we'll be counting on you to help pro-choice leaders like Senate Majority Whip Richard Durbin seal the deal to secure this victory for women's reproductive freedom in D.C.

SHAME: Gov. Jan Brewer of Arizona
We wag our finger this month at the new anti-choice governor of Arizona, Jan Brewer, who abruptly reversed predecessor Janet Napolitano's commonsense pro-choice tradition. Gov. Brewer signed into law a series of anti-choice measures designed to block women's access to basic reproductive-health care. NARAL Pro-Choice Arizona fought hard to block the bill, and we commend our affiliate for its continued dedication in the face of these new challenges.

Dear Pro-Choice Activist,

We've had great victories this month: Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) led the charge to pass a strong health-reform bill through the Senate health committee; the House voted to lift a ban on the Washington, D.C. government's ability to decide whether to use its local funds to provide abortion care; and the House finally voted to end funding for President Bush's failed "abstinence-only" policy.

But there are days when we feel like we're drinking from a firehose. A coalition of extreme anti-choice groups just started a massive three-week campaign to use health-care reform to advance its anti-choice agenda -- and their allies in Congress have filed dozens of new anti-choice amendments. Nineteen House Democrats have even come out in support of some extreme anti-choice proposals on health-care reform.

On days like these, what keeps us going is knowing that you're there with us. My best,
Nancy Keenan
President, NARAL Pro-Choice America
